The condition of the exterior and if all the controls are working probably will tell you more about the condition of the camera then the shutter count.īut, in the context of which you speak, and using the same implied 'assumption' a camera with a nearly flawless body is 'assumed' to have a low shutter count. Or a camera with a high shutter count may have only been used in the studio without any weather exposure and minimumal dust exposure and yet internally it may be in a like new condition and provide you with years of reliable use. A camera that has been dropped, used in the rain with no protection or used in very dusty dirty environment may have a low shutter count but could fail right after you get it, and it may not even be the shutter that fials. With all of the above a shutter count won't tell you much about the condition of the camera. It doesn't say anything about the battery viewfinder, condition of the view screeen or the reflective coating on the reflex mirror. Besides the shutter count just tells you about the shutter.
A shutyter with a 100,000 rating may fail at a count of 1000 or may fiale at a count of 200,000. Another thing to keep in mind the shutter life rating is a statistical number. I am not sure but I strongly suspect that the shutter count is reset when a new shutter is installed.

What you should ask is between those two values. Once you find the average costs at those sites, knock off 40 percent to arrive at fair price for a private sale.
The exact dollar amounts will vary so use your best judgement.Īs for determining average fair market value for a direct sale of a used photographic item, I look at KEH, Adorama and B&H used sections for similar equipment costs. I suggest researching cost-of-replacement and try to determine if you are better off having those repairs done professionally yourself, and adding a portion of the repair cost to the sale price, or simply discount the body by some of those costs, since this body has high usage, and add a "sold as is" disclaimer. Shutter box and mirror box assemblies are the two most mechanical portions of any dSLR, and they generally have similar actuation durability ratings.
